Playtime est organisé autour des chemins croisés de deux personnages: Monsieur HULOT cherche à rencontrer un patron dans un aéroport mais est bien vite perdu dans la modernité des lieux gigantesques, et Barbara, une jeune touriste américaine en visite à Paris. Tous les deux se perdent et se rendent à l'inauguration de l'immeuble mais le cocktail tourne à la catastrophe...
L'esthétique très moderne du film devait impressionner à l'époque, et peut paraître dépassée aujourd'hui. Bien que ce film fut très critiqué à sa sortie et suivi d'un échec commercial, il est aussi considéré par certains comme l'un des 100 plus grands films de tous les temps.
